On November 7, the Tsilhqot’in community members appeared in Canada’s Supreme Court to assert their title to traditional lands. This comes more than 20 years after a lawsuit was filed against the government of British Columbia over commercial logging on land the Tsilhqot’in claim as traditionally theirs.
As the first of its kind to reach Canada’s highest court, the case will determine the future of Indigenous land claims—not only for the Tsilhqot’in, but for First Nations across the country. The ruling is expected to outline the process for native land claims in the future. The final decision is not expected until next year.
Prior to the proceedings, hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the Supreme Court to show solidarity with the Tsilhqot’in. Allies joined in prayer, offering words of encouragement for the Tsilhqot’in with traditional songs and medicine. Many people traveled from across Canada to show their support.
The highly anticipated trial begins as Tsilhqot’in fight a related battle with Taseko Mines Ltd over the proposed New Prosperity mine near Teztan Biny, or Fish Lake.
