Cultural Survival is pleased to announce the creation of its International Indigenous Youth Advisory Council to ensure that meaningful consultation, Indigenous youth-centered action, and communication are being represented. We believe it is transformative to listen and respond effectively to the dynamic stories, Indigenous knowledge systems, and human rights of Indigenous youth in order to generate an unprecedented level of coordination and collective innovation as an intergenerational global community. Cultural Survival’s foundational principles honor the experience and expertise of Indigenous youth leading to the development of the International Indigenous Youth Advisory Council in cultivating critical connections with Indigenous youth as part of our Indigenous Media Communication Youth Fellowship. In the spirit of self-determination and full, effective, and equal participation, we recognize Indigenous youth as key decision-makers in the development of the world community. The International Indigenous Youth Advisory Council supports and promotes the leadership of Indigenous youth for the cultural survival and the human rights of their communities.
What is a Youth Advisory Council?
- Youth Advisory Councils will create a dialogue and a relationship between youth and adults within an organization.
- It is an invitation for youth to give meaningful insight in the decision-making processes, services and programs to increase the participation of youth.
Role and Responsibilities?
Everyone holds a role and takes responsibility in providing input and advice for the revitalization and maintenance of cultural identity and values.
- Contribution to the development of material for our programs in Indigenous Rights Radio program or quarterly magazine and web posts.
- Advising on our social media in publications and creation of ideas, projects, and initiatives that will be developed by youth for youth.
- Raising awareness on Indigenous youth issues, rights, resistance, and experience.
- Encouraged to participate in group chat and check-ins with coordinator.
- Commitment to attend at least 6 out of 12 virtual annual meetings.
Outcomes for youth?
Through the Cultural Survival International Indigenous Youth Advisory Council, youth will help contribute to leadership development, visioning opportunities, advocacy, and generating a unified global Indigenous community. Members of the IIYAC will have the opportunity to engage in and build meaningful dialogue across diverse Indigenous communities and levels of decision-making, such as:
- Opportunity to learn and collaborate with other community organizations and increase awareness on the mechanisms of non-governmental organizations.
- Alliances with Indigenous youth from around the world and expansion of a global network.
What are we looking for?
Indigenous youth between the ages 15 to 30 year of age who are passionate about Indigenous Peoples Rights and motivated in making a difference.
- Commitment to the following values: honor, relatedness, co-creativity, equality, respect for diversity, and collaboration.
- To be prepared in committing time in attending monthly meetings for a minim of 12 months.
- Creativity and innovation to inspire other youth
