ETHIOPIA: Violent clashes continue between Anuak and Nuer

At least 60 people have been killed and over 8,000 forced to leave their homes in the wake of clashes between Anuak and Nuer living in Gambella State on the border of Sudan. The Ethiopian Human Rights Council (EHRCO) reported that the conflict first erupted in July, and that it has been fueled by political grievances. The Nuer contend that the Anuak have obstructed their efforts to gain effective political representation in the regional government, after the death of a Nuer vice president last year. EHRCO attributed the increasing intensity of the violence to a lack of government involvement and intervention.
