Violent clashes erupted once again last week between Fulani pastoralists and other residents of Plateau State, just weeks after a series of deadly confrontations between these groups paralyzed the district in May. Thirty people were reported killed last week during attacks on local farmers whom Fulani herders accused of killing cattle; another six were killed on June 28. Governor of Plateau State Joshua Dariye has pledged to renew efforts to bring peace and security to the region. He announced this week the beginning of “Operation Flush Out”, a program designed to identify and remove the region so-called “strange elements” and disturbers of the peace.
