Promoting Indigenous Language Rights in Practice Wednesday, June 22
Language Rights Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill
Join fellow grassroots advocates and volunteers for Native American, Native Alaskan, and Native Hawaiian languages in delivering a positive message to Congress about a growing Indigenous language revitalization movement operating at maximum capacity with limited federal support.
Congress needs to hear from you about the beneficial impacts of local projects that use federal funding appropriations supporting Native language instruction and revitalization, including the Administration for Native Americans, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, Head Start & Early Head Start, and the National Science Foundation. All provide key grants for community-based Native language revitalization efforts.
At a time of great language shift, loss, and recovery for Native communities you can make a difference in ensuring the timeless tribal worldviews living in these precious heritage languages are both protected and spoken anew by future generations. Tribes are making substantial investments, and the federal government should, too.
Summit Goal: On Wednesday, June 22, join Native language advocates in engaging every one of the 62 members of the House and Senate appropriations committees with Native language revitalization success stories, along with justifications for additional federal support.
