The recent government foreshore and seabed proposal is being heavily contested by both sides and is likely to result in a continuation of prior, as well as new, grievance claims. While National Party Maori Affairs spokesman Gerry Brownlee says the government should abandon the idea of dual ownership and bestow the title to the Crown, Maori opinion is that the new proposal breaches the treaty.
