Job Opening: Indigenous Community Radio Grant Initiative Program Assistant

Position Available: Full-time Cultural Survival Indigenous Community Radio Grant Initiative Program Assistant- English-speaking

Cultural Survival is a nonprofit organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, with remote staff based in Hawaii, Colorado, Guatemala, Nicaragua, South Africa and Canada. Cultural Survival advocates for Indigenous Peoples' rights and supports Indigenous communities’ self-determination, cultures and political resilience since 1972.  There are approximately 370 million Indigenous persons in the world, belonging to 5,000 different groups, in 90 countries worldwide. Indigenous Peoples live in every region of the world, sometimes identifying as Tribal Peoples, Original Peoples, First Peoples, Native Peoples, Adivasi, or other terms, Indigenous Peoples constitute about 5% of the world’s population.

Cultural Survival’s Indigenous Community Radio Grant Initiative is a new project under our Community Media Program that will provide opportunities for international Indigenous community radio stations to apply for funding through a nontraditional, culturally appropriate and dynamic grants process that will be designed to meet the needs of these burgeoning community broadcast systems. Grants will be available to provide equipment, training in production and journalism, legal support and content production as well as specific trainings as needed to ensure sustainable and impactful communication platforms and regional networks that support and advance Indigenous communities’ rights and ability to engage in relevant issues affecting their wellbeing. The project will work with 15-20 Indigenous community radio stations in Central America, East Africa, South America and Nepal, with the objective of ensuring that target Indigenous communities have a viable and critical medium for dissemination of news, information, community events, historical documentation, education and entertainment.

Responsibilities:

This is a full time position, based in Nepal.

The Nepal-based Program Assistant will provide direct support and assistance to the Project Manager (based in Guatemala) on the management, mentoring and monitoring of all projects funded by this program internationally. This will involve the coordination and implementation of site visits at the onset of the grant to help each potential grantee organization develop objectives, outcomes, goals and evaluation markers for their projects. As part of the site visits, the Program Assistant will guide grant applicants through the process of creating an application that will be appropriate and accessible for that particular community (including video, written, or audio submission). The Program Assistant will continue to offer guidance and engagement to Nepal-based grantees throughout the grant period and beyond.

The Program Assistant will work with the Cultural Survival project team to provide technical assistance and training to grantees through in-person site visits (with an emphasis on communities in Nepal), webinars, Skype/conference calls and emails. Meetings will cover a variety of capacity building topics such as investigative reporting, production, equipment use, financial record keeping (for grants management), storytelling and community organizing.

Finally, the program assistant will play the role of country expert to the Cultural Survival team, ensuring that the support we are providing is culturally sensitive and relevant to the community.
