A spokesman for the Ogiek of Kenya’s Mau and Tinderet forests called last week for constitutional changes to provide his people with clearly defined land allocations, greater political representation and official recognition as the country’s 43rd tribe. He appealed to his fellow Ogiek to take on a larger role in the constitutional review process. The Ogiek are among the indigenous inhabitants of Kenya’s highlands. They have filed suit against the government for planned eviction from their ancestral homelands in the Mau Forest.
