Inuit leaders staunchly opposed same-sex marriage in a recent visit to Iqaluit by the House of Commons justice committee. At stake is an Ontario ruling that aims to force the federal government to acknowledge the rights of gays and lesbians to civil union. Many Nunavimmiut say they regard this issue as another aspect of western culture thrust upon them against their will, arguing that traditional values of family and survival through procreation will be threatened.
