We express our support for the full participation of Universidade Pluriétnica Indígena Aldeia Maracanã and its scholars in the deliberations and discussions with the MEC Commission concerning the establishment of an Indigenous university in Brazil.
The urban Indigenous movement, as epitomized by the Aldeia Maracanã community, is pivotal to fostering diverse and critically reflective Indigenous institutions. According to CENSO 2022, almost 50% of Indigenous Peoples in Brazil live in urban areas, and 63.27% live outside of ratified territories. Where the Aldeia Maracana is located, in the Southeast, the proportion of people who identify as Indigenous and live outside of Indigenous Lands is the highest at 82.5%. That is why it is critical that scholars and community members of Aldeia Maracana bring with them a wealth of Traditional Knowledge, contemporary insights, and a deep commitment to education that is culturally resonant and forward-thinking.
The inclusion of their voices ensures that the envisioned university will not only serve as an academic institution but also as a beacon of Indigenous identities, cultures, and resilience in a variety of contexts. Their participation underscores the importance of capacity building, education, advocacy, and the decolonization of State institutions – all essential pillars for the future of Indigenous academic excellence and the security of their rights.
We urge the commission to recognize the indispensable contributions and perspectives that the scholars from Universidade Pluriétnica Indígena Aldeia Maracanã can bring. Their involvement is key to crafting a university that genuinely embodies the spirit, aspirations, and needs of Indigenous communities.

*Aldeia Maracanã is an Indigenous resistance and community institution located next to the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. It serves as a reference for the Indigenous movement and is the home of the Pluriethnic Indigenous University of Aldeia Maracanã. This space is where the community affirms its identity, bridging ancestral knowledge with contemporary society. Their activities encompass sacred practices, maracá circles, lessons in language and culture, bio-construction, planting, weaving, graphic arts, and Indigenous film screenings. The community also welcomes regular visits from school and university students, offering diverse learning experiences.

Expressamos nosso apoio à plena participação da Universidade Pluriétnica Indígena Aldeia Maracanã e seus acadêmicos nas deliberações e discussões com a comissão do MEC sobre a criação de uma Universidade Indígena no Brasil.
O movimento indígena urbano, exemplificado pela comunidade Aldeia Maracanã, é fundamental para promover instituições indígenas diversas e críticas. Segundo o censo de 2022, quase 50% dos povos indígenas do país vivem em áreas urbanas, e 63,27% vivem fora dos territórios homologados. Onde a Aldeia Maracanã está localizada, no Sudeste, essa proporção é ainda maior: 82,5% das pessoas que se autodeclaram indígenas vivem fora das Terras Indígenas. É por isso que é crucial que acadêmicos e membros da comunidade da Aldeia Maracanã tragam consigo uma riqueza de conhecimento tradicional, insights contemporâneos e um profundo compromisso com a educação que é culturalmente relevante e inovadora.
A inclusão de suas vozes garante que a universidade projetada não só servirá como uma instituição acadêmica, mas também como um farol de identidade, cultura e resiliência indígenas em diversos contextos.
