According to 2000 Census Bureau data, New York City has exceeded Los Angeles as the city with the largest population of Native Americans in the country. The Honolulu metro area also has a claim to the distinction, as Native Hawaiians were counted separately for the first time on this census. The 2000 census was the first time that people were allowed to claim a two-race heritage, leading to a significant increase in the number of people claiming to be Native Americans. Phoenix, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, San Diego, Anchorage, Albuquerque, and Chicago were also high on the list.
