Internship Program

Cultural Survival’s internship program is an integral part of the organization. Interns actively participate in their assigned program or department and play an essential role in daily operations while achieving the learning objectives of their internship.

The Cultural Survival internship program offers unique opportunities for mentorship, learning, and development in the realm of nonprofit organizations. It is particularly suited for individuals interested in the crucial work carried out by Cultural Survival in advancing and defending the rights, lands, languages, and cultures of Indigenous Peoples. This initiative underscores our social commitment to academic development and the creation of meaningful learning opportunities in areas such as research, communications, capacity building, community media, Indigenous Rights Radio, International Arts Bazaars,  administration/operations, and advocacy. Our internships are open to individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering a rich and inclusive learning environment. We welcome individuals from diverse nations, geographies, races, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, religion, spirituality, age, experiences, viewpoints, and cosmovisions.

Our main office is in Cambridge, MA; our internship positions are remote and unpaid. However, we understand that internships can involve certain expenses. That's why a stipend or monetary contribution may be available for selected internships. The amount of the stipend will vary depending on the internship. It is intended to help cover expenses related to the internship, such as phone, internet use, electricity, and office supplies. Interested candidates should review the content of each advertised internship opportunity to confirm the availability and details of the stipend.

At Cultural Survival, we value proactive and collaborative interns who can work both as team members and independently. While a strong command of the Spanish language is often beneficial due to our work in Latin America, each internship has its own unique requirements. All interns receive dedicated mentorship from Cultural Survival staff in their assigned departments and are invited to attend weekly or biweekly online team meetings. Additionally, midway through the internship, a meeting is held between the seasonal interns and the Human Resources team to ensure a supportive and inclusive environment for all.

General Information

Annually, we open summer, fall, and spring internship opportunities.

Each internship opportunity:

  • Has an application period
  • Contains defined learning objectives
  • Corresponds to a specific program or department
  • It is subject to mentorship from a manager, senior manager, or director of Cultural Survival.
  • The general duration of the initial internship is three months. In some cases, the internship is offered for six months, allowing for a deeper immersion in the work of Cultural Survival; this will be specified in the announcements. We understand that everyone's schedule is different, so we are open to discussing adjusting the internship schedule to suit our intern's needs.

Extending an existing internship may be possible if the intern and the program manager agree.
