Radio B'alam - Mayan Voices (Maya Mam)

Radio B'alam-Voces Maya is an internet radio station located in Oakland, California, serving the Indigenous Maya Mam immigrant community and reaching over 70,000 followers. We provide culturally-based information and entertainment through radio broadcasts, video, and audio content in the Mam language. Our strategies are to increase cultural pride, community connection and healing, and skills to overcome challenges while adapting to the U.S. Our programs help people understand that they have a right to be safe and have their needs met in a culturally and linguistically accessible way.

Our goal is to be a reliable source of information and support for the Indigenous Maya Mam communities living in California. Activities will include weekly talk shows on immigration legal services, health care, immunizations, workers' rights, immigrant rights, mental health support, and other public and community resources; live broadcast from community spaces, tabletop events, pop-up vaccine fairs, and other events to provide public service announcements; and broadcast of Mam cultural events, including dance parties, weddings, funerals, graduation ceremonies, and sporting events. These programs help people access services and advocate for their rights while reminding the Mam immigrant community of our rich culture and languages, foster pride and solidarity, and help heal our community from the trauma it has suffered.
