Eden FM is a nonprofit community radio station broadcasting in the Garden Route district of the Western Cape province of the Republic of South Africa. The vision of the station is to celebrate the diversity, culture, and heritage of its listeners with programs to inform and educate them. Eighty percent of the station’s listeners are of Khoisan origin, and the station broadcasts programs to help its listeners foster pride in themselves, rediscover their lost history and heritage, and celebrate their achievements.
The aim of the project is to focus on the storytelling of the Indigenous people of the Garden Route, with particular emphasis on the production and dissemination of three community case studies on forced removals in Klein Karoo, the vegetation and agricultural importance of the molar pea in the Ladismith and Kannaland area, and the existence of the Indigenous Loerie birds in the mission village of Frehmersheim. The project will train three community researchers in interviewing techniques, storytelling, and research. This research project will be done in collaboration with the Khoisan chiefs in the area as well as the community. It will be presented publicly, then broadcast on the community radio station.
