Orkonerei FM was formed primarily to improve the lifestyle of the Indigenous Maasai community through information, communication, and education on development issues. It also supports the community in coordinating and organizing local economic development initiatives and facilitates community participation, inclusion, and engagement in a wide range of community development issues. Orkonerei FM is the first community radio station in Tanzania and has been granted permission to translate programs and news bulletin content using the Indigenous Maasai language.
The Indigenous women's project on gender equality, land, and economic empowerment aims to develop a community-centered participatory and democratic platform for a women's movement on gender equality and their rights to own land and property, including participation in decision-making platforms. Women's meetings at neighborhood and district summits would create more interaction among women to inspire and motivate each other and collectively raise their voices on a myriad of concerns. Orkonerei FM Radio will broadcast live this training and the meetings to reach a larger audience of women who are not participating in the project. Orkonerei FM Radio will also produce a compelling radio documentary showcasing the situation of women on gender equality, land, and economic empowerment.
