Human rights are measured through United Nations covenants and conventions as well as the Universal Periodic Review process.
Regular State reviews monitor how the rights enshrined in these treaties are being implemented. The review of every nation offers a chance to educate citizens and demand the realization of the rights enshrined in the treaties ratified by their governments. Indigenous Peoples’ involvement is essential to seek justice through the review process.
Cultural Survival wants to ensure that Indigenous rights are included in those evaluations. In partnership with local Indigenous organizations, we develop and submit alternative country and thematic reports to treaty body committees and the Human Rights Council. These reports detail how a given country is–or is not–respecting the rights of its Indigenous Peoples in relation to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and offer recommendations for improvements.
