Our Guatemalan Community Radio Project team welcomes its newest member, Ingrid Sub Cuc, to the team. Ingrid is half Kaqchikel, half Q’eqchi’ from Sololá, Guatemala. She grew up in Sololá, moving to the U.S. at age 12. Ingrid went on to pursue her passion for Indigenous rights and medicine in the U.S. She is currently finishing her degree in biology at Whitworth University in Washington.
Ingrid has returned to Guatemala various times throughout her years spent abroad, working as an intern and volunteer for health organizations that work with Indigenous communities in Guatemala. As well, she has participated in various projects, working with Latino communities in the U.S. as well. She worked as an intern for an extensive research program regarding Latino and Indigenous immigrant’s health in the United States. She has been hoping to return to Guatemala and serve her Indigenous community for years, and now, she has found the perfect opportunity. Ingrid stated, “I am honored and happy to return to my homeland and serve my indigenous community. I know I will learn a lot from the people there and from my coworkers that fight for the restoration and preservation of indigenous rights.”
Ingrid speaks fluent Spanish, fluent English and very good Kaqchikel, making her the ideal candidate for our bilingual communications intern position with the Community Radio Project in Guatemala. Adding to that, Ingrid is extremely enthusiastic about the opportunity. “I’m very excited to work with the Community Radio movement in Guatemala, to learn more about the political and social limitations that face indigenous communities. Community radios serve as the only means to transmit information to some rural indigenous communities. It is highly important for the development and empowerment of indigenous people to have community radios that encourage these communities to fight for their rights. “
Please join us in welcoming Ingrid to the team!
