Amnesty International has denounced the judicial process that has resulted in the acquittal of 124 policemen involved in the 1996 massacre of 19 members of the Landless Workers Movement (MST). The victims were either shot or killed with machetes. Earlier convictions of a colonel and a major were heralded as promising developments, but the court failed to charge those with political responsibility for the massacre and tried 127 soldiers in a single session.
