Over 250 activists were confronted by police during a Buddhist prayer ceremony for the protection of Prey Lang forest in Cambodia. Held at the Angkor Wat complex on December 14th, the event was organized by the Prey Lang Network to call attention to the destruction occurring within the Prey Lang forest, an area that is currently under threat from 33 separate economic land concessions that have been granted by the Cambodian government to private companies.
Despite the police’s attempt to block the ceremony, over 100 villagers maintained their prayer in protest. “What the authority did is illegal in Cambodian law, because they did not allow villagers to celebrate the Buddha ceremony. It is a violation of human rights,” said Seng Sokheng, a representative of the Community Peace Building Network, in an article by the Phnom Penh Post.
