Cultural Survival and the National Alliance to Save Native Languages are facilitating the National Native Language Revitalization Summit in Washington D.C. this May 11th-13th.
Monday's agenda includes training sessions on finding tribal language materials in federal archives, and developing funding proposals to sustain grassroots language programs. Tuesday's session, "From Code Talkers to Immersion," will be sponsored and hosted entirely by the National Museum of the American Indian, and keynoted by renowned language immersion school director Darrell Robes Kipp (Blackfeet) of the Piegan Institute's Cuts Wood School. Native American Code Talkers will also be recognized in a special short film screening and presentation for their heroic use of Native languages. On Wednesday, participants will convene on Capitol Hill for a Language Impact Day to educate congressional lawmakers about the critical importance of defending and increasing support for Native language programs.
