Despite government sentiment that the indigenous Taino have died out on the island of Puerto Rico, many Puerto Ricans, supported by DNA evidence, claim to be members of the group. Though skeptics claim genetic evidence has little to do with continuity of culture, Taino descendents participating in a cultural renaissance are helping to rebuild the indigenous community on the island.
