SPAIN: Basque Unions Strike to Protest Unemployment Reforms

Two days before a European Union Summit takes place in Seville and a day before a national strike was called to protest it, Basque unions held a strike of their own in Biscaye province. Union members barricaded roads, railways and shut down bus services to protest new unemployment plans to cut allowances for those who turn down three “acceptable” job offers within 20 miles of their homes.
