Cultural Survival is pleased to announce its fifth call for proposals for the Indigenous Community Media Youth Fellowship which supports Indigenous youth communicators in building their capacity in audiovisual, community radio, journalism, and alternative community media tools. For this call, applicants must reside in one of the following states of South Mexico: Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Yucatán.
With years of experience coordinating capacity building efforts through workshops, radio station exchanges, facilitating the development of regional networks, and supporting advocacy efforts to legalize and democratize community media, Cultural Survival elevates the experience, assets, and expertise of the communities with which we partner through our Indigenous Community Media Fund. We believe that it is crucial to listen and respond to the self-determined needs of the communities in order to provide support that is sustainable and most importantly, pertinent to the needs of the community. Indigenous youth are the future of their communities and developing youth leadership is an integral part of ensuring communities’ well being.
The Fellowship will support six youth proposals of alternative and community communication from collectives or individuals between the ages of 14 - 25, from the linguistic communities of southern Mexico with a maximum amount of $ 2,500 USD for a 6-month period (July to December 2021). Diversity and gender equality will be considered in the selection process.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of the Fellowship is to promote content and creative initiatives of alternative and community media, conceived and promoted by Indigenous youth, with an emphasis on community social processes such as the defense of the territory; revitalization of Indigenous languages; promotion of Indigenous Peoples’ rights; food sovereignty; art; traditional knowledge and community practices; among other issues related to the community and cultures of Indigenous Peoples.
ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP
The fellowship will support projects in the field of alternative community media that meet and include the following categories:
- Audiovisual documentation that reflects community processes that document and highlight the art of the community
- Other alternative forms of communication (digital radio, streaming, high-impact posters)
- Development of new capacities of community members through training and workshops which help launch new communication projects
- Participatory communication
- Initiatives developed in community radios
CANDIDATE PROFILE
- For this call, applicants must reside in one of the following states of South Mexico: Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Yucatán
- Indigenous youth between 14 and 25 years of age
- Comes from a linguistic community in the region
- Not a previous Cultural Survival beneficiary or partner
- Demonstrates participation in community life (Endorsement letter from community organization or media required)
SELECTION CRITERIA
Project proposals will be selected based on the following criteria:
- Rooted in the Indigenous knowledge and practices of one’s community
- Claim and promote one’s Indigenous culture
- Use and work to revitalize one’s Indigenous language
- Originality and community context of proposal
- Use a transformative approach in the face of political and sociocultural problems.
- Includes measurable and executable objectives in the stipulated period
- Include a plan for the dissemination of the project through community media (radio, TV, and digital platforms), public presentations, exhibitions, advertising posters, among others
- Adhere to the project budget limit
