On May 6, program director Paula Palmer met Sea Turtle Restoration Project's Doug Israel and Global Response members Crystal Law, Philip Paul and Bill Bernthal at United Nations headquarters in New York City, where they delivered over 1,100 letters addressed to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. Each letter was a personal appeal for the U.N to take action to save the Pacific Leatherback Sea Turtle from extinction.
The group met with Andre Tahindro, Senior Officer with the Ocean Affairs and Law office of the UN’s Sea Division. The letters were received by the office of the Assistant Secretary General for External Relations, Gillian Sorenson. From there we hope Mr. Annan will “wake up and smell the seaweed!” as one youthful member wrote.
